Summer Volunteer Training

This year we Blue Lake will be hosting two training events for those that intend to volunteer at camp this summer. If you plan to volunteer or are considering volunteering at camp this summer then this event is highly recommended. We will be discussing our expectations for volunteers, what role you will play during your week of camp, general procedures at camp, answers to your questions, and more. Our first event will be April 19th at 6:30 p.m. at Fairhope UMC in Fairhope, AL and on May 1st at 10:00 a.m. at Blue Lake. Food will be provided at both locations. If you are planning to attend please RSVP by email so that we can have count for meals and materials.

Please RSVP Patric Newton for the Blue Lake event at programs@bluelakecamp.com

Change Lives This Summer

Volunteers are vital to the ministry at Blue Lake. Volunteers play important roles each week of camp. They provide health care, direct camps, counsel, lead classes, and much much more. It is our hope that this page will provide adult volunteers the most up to date information for your time at Blue Lake. Below you will find important information and forms that will be useful for any adult that intends to volunteer at any Blue Lake Summer Camp.

We would love to see your smiling face at camp this summer. We invite you to consider spending a week of your summer giving back the children and youth of our conference. If you have never volunteered at Blue Lake and are interested in finding a camp to help with please contact Patric Newton (programs@bluelakecamp.com) for more information.

Cost of Camp for Volunteers

This year we are excited to announce that camp costs are now lower than ever for volunteers. We desire and depend on the hard work of volunteers from around our conference and it is our goal to make your time at Blue Lake as affordable as possible. We want quality leaders to be a part of our programs and we do not want cost to keep you from contributing to the ministry that happens each summer at camp. Below you will see a list of prices for adult volunteers. Please note that some camps are shorter in duration or have higher costs associated with them. This is why not all camps have the same fees to attend them.

All camps will cost $135 per adult unless they are listed below.

Adults attending 3-day Camps $120

Adults attending JesusJAM $145

Adults attending Youth Choir $150

What do Volunteers do?

Volunteers can have any number of jobs throughout the summer, but the most common task is that of a counselor. Though you may be called group leaders, adult leaders, family group leaders, cabin leaders, etc. your responsibility is the same. Most volunteers come to camp to lead a group of children for the entire week. This means you will help your group stay on schedule, you will help your group follow the rules, you will sleep in cabins with your group, you will be present at most of the activities your group takes part in throughout the day, and you will eat meals with your group. Essentially you are a part of a family for an entire week and your responsibility is to ensure the safety and well being of that family. You will work closely with Blue Lake staff and the deans of your camp to ensure that all campers have a great experience during their time here.

Volunteers come to camp to participate in a unique ministry to children and youth of the Alabama West Florida Conference. Volunteers are expected to perform their duties with a Christian spirit and in accordance with the beliefs of the United Methodist Church.

Volunteers do not come to Blue Lake for summer camp because they want a cheap vacation. Volunteers have a difficult job and we have high expectations of all our camp leaders. Summer Camp is place that impacts the lives of thousands of people each year and high expectations help us to ensure that participants have a positive experience while at Blue Lake.

Volunteers are expected to be a part of the team while they are here at Blue Lake. This means that they stay with their group, they do what is asked of them, they respect the Deans and Blue Lake Staff, and they actively participate in camp activities. Volunteers that participate in the full camp experience often find that they get just as much out of their camp as the children and youth under their care.

As a volunteer you are a representative of the ministry of Blue Lake and in doing so agree to abide by the rules and expectations that have been laid out by Camp Leaders and our Conference. As a part of this process, volunteers must register for camp, have a background check/proof of background check afidavit on file with Blue Lake, and an Adult Health Form. An explanation and link to each of these can be found below.

Important Volunteer Information

-All volunteers must be at least 4 years older than the oldest child that will be under their care and must be at least 18 years old to be a volunteer counselor/group leader.

-We encourage churches sending children and youth to camp to consider sending one adult for every five children they send. This may not always be necessary, but it is important to have enough volunteers in place to cover the amount of participants attending camp. Please contact our office if you need more information about this.

-If you are interested in volunteering for a particular camp, please contact the dean of that camp to receive more information. Many deans have training prior to their week of camp that will be important for you to attend.

Required Forms and Information

All volunteers must register for camp. If you are coming with a group you may want to consider registering yourself with the group. Please read the registration information on this site before you register. Below is a link to the online registration site and the paper registration form.

Volunteers also need to have a completed Adult Health Form on file which can be found below. Health forms are valid for two years. This means that if you filled out a health form last summer then you already have a valid form on file.

All adult participants must have a background check on file with Blue Lake. If you have a background check on file with your church or another organization all we need you to submit is the completed affidavit form that can be found below. If you need Blue Lake to run a background check we are more than willing to do so. The cost for this is $9 and requires the completed background check form which can be found below.
